Steam VR Theater Mode Will Allow Access to Your Game Library in VR

The question has been asked for years “when are we going to see GOOD virtual reality gaming?” well thankfully the answer is upon us. The HTC Vive and Oculus Rift are both set to release this year and the gaming community is going absolutely crazy. It is important to remember though that with any “new” system, it is not as much about the hardware as it is about the software. Gamers expect a lot when it comes to the experience offered. That is why the confirmation from Valve that it has created a VR mode for the already successful Steam engine is extremely exciting. We already know and love the value that the Steam engine brings to PC gaming and the fact that it will be paired with systems like the Vive and Oculus Rift leads us to believe that there are great thing in store for the future.

Currently in the early BETA stages of development Valve has promised a demo at GDC 2016. What the Theater mode plans to do is allow the gamer to experience even traditional style games with an aspect of VR, completely immersing the gamer in the world of the game by the way of a large interactive screen that displays the traditional game.

This is the same method in which Netflix has approached the VR playing field. The Netflix VR app places you in a large room with an absolutely immense screen to watch your favorite movies and shows. We don’t have any solid indication of what appearance the Steam VR mode is going to take on yet, but we should expect something very similar to what Netflix has done. It would seem that this is the best option to offer VR in a situation where the software itself is not programmed to be interactive.
